The NYC with Santino Hassell
October 2016 – Guest Blogger
Welcome Back to Santino Hassell
Get Ready as he delves into something we all love to talk about – sex. More specifically, a character’s sexual personality. Enjoy!!
A Hero’s Sexual Personality
One of the most memorable moments in my time co-writing the Cyberlove series with Megan Erickson was when I texted her (during a family dinner) to ask: “So, what’s Luke’s fucking style?” It was definitely poor timing, but this question is key to not only sex scenes but also to the development of characters.
Sometimes the type of sex you have depends on the mood you’re in, but aside from that everyone has a sexual personality. Whether you’re adventurous, reserved, a loud dirty talker or someone who enjoys a sensual seduction, you definitely have a style. I know I do, although I’m not telling ;). What I will do is break down Five Boroughs by the distinct sexual styles of the heroes.
Michael Rodriguez and Nunzio Medici (Sutphin Boulevard) – intense and dirty
After the tension built for almost two decades, the first sexual union of Mikezio was explosive. Michael didn’t expect to be so turned on by his best friend but once he had a taste… there was no going back and no denying the chemistry between them. And the constant fantasizing about his best friend and the love of his life led to Nunzio ravishing Michael every time the opportunity presented itself. Their sex scenes are intense, urgent, and peppered with some serious dirty talk.
He slid a hand between us to squeeze me, and laughed quietly against my sweaty face. Everything Nunzio did was so smooth, so deliberate and practiced, that I felt shameless and out of control in comparison. He could draw this out all night, and all I wanted was to be screwed until I was sobbing into the mattress and aching from the violation.
Raymond Rodriguez and David Butler (Sunset Park and Interborough) – exploratory and affectionate
Rayvid went from an affectionate bromance with teasing and low key flirtation to affectionate fuck buddies experimenting with Raymond’s bisexuality. The fact that they could never keep their hands off each other is very telling about their sexual styles. Not only are they extremely hot for each other, but they simply love touching each other. One of my favorite sex scenes with them starts aggressive and impatient after a jealous explosion but turned gentle and emotional over time because so many of their feelings manifest when they put their hands on each other.
My voice came out steady, almost calm, as though I didn’t want to beg him to touch me. Like I hadn’t been fantasizing about him coming into my room and putting his hands on me for the past month. Longer. Since the first time I saw him in person after spending over an hour on Facebook talking him into the meeting. I’d expected the dark eyes, strong jawline, and golden skin. I hadn’t expected all of the details that had made Raymond irresistible to me. His long, lean body, his messy hair, his smile.
Caleb Stone and Oliver ‘Oli’ Buckley (First and First) – teasing and kinky
Caloli… OliCal… Stuckley? (I need ship name help) [We like Buckston] was the most interesting relationship to write in terms of their sexual development, because FIRST AND FIRST is the most erotic of the Five Boroughs novels to date. Part of Caleb’s character development was him coming out of his shell and recognizing there is no shame in having filthy sexual fantasies. And their relationship first blossomed by Oli helping him to realize that by turning him out. Their sex scenes feature teasing, role play, and plenty of toys.
“Now tell me what to do,” Oli whispered in my ear. “In detail.”
“Please—” I wrapped my hands around the side of the bar, gripping so tight that the edge bit into my skin. “Please, Oli.”
A spasm went through Oli’s hands, but he didn’t relent. “Tell me.”
If you want to know more about the Five Boroughs heroes you can both read and listen to Sutphin Boulevard, Sunset Park, and First and First now. Interborough, releasing on October 24th, features characters from the first three novels and some more of that affectionate Rayvid sex!

The Raymond Rodriguez from a few years ago wouldn’t recognize the guy he is today. He’s left his slacker ways far behind him and is now juggling two jobs and school. But the balancing act doesn’t allow much time for the man he loves.
David is doing his best to be supportive, but problems at work and his own insecurity leave him frustrated—in more ways than the obvious—whenever he goes to bed before Raymond gets home. The heat and affection between them is still there, but they barely have the time or energy to enjoy it. And it doesn’t help that Raymond is still hiding David from his colleagues.
The stress mounts so high that a vacation in paradise is filled with turmoil instead of harmony, and culminates on their return to the five boroughs with broken promises and heartache. They have to figure out how to stop allowing their differences to overshadow their love. It’s the only way they’ll make it to forever.
Five Boroughs series
Santino Hassell was raised by a conservative family, but he was anything but traditional. He grew up to be a smart-mouthed, school cutting grunge kid, then a transient twenty-something, and eventually transformed into an unlikely romance author.
Santino writes queer romance that is heavily influenced by the gritty, urban landscape of New York City, his belief that human relationships are complex and flawed, and his own life experiences.
