Aaron ‘don’t ever call me Fatbaby’ Sims is lucky to be alive. Or at least that is what everyone keeps telling him. He doesn’t feel lucky, though.
He’s scarred, has more than a little bit of a bad attitude, and there isn’t a single day that goes by that he doesn’t wish his wife would’ve just finished off the job.
After being denied his old position at the fire department, he leaves, and doesn’t look back. He heads straight to Alabama and into the semi-welcoming arms of The Dixie Wardens MC. There he becomes a part of a brotherhood that forces him to get back in the land of the living.
Imogen is a smart girl. A girl who doesn’t always make the best decisions.
Her heart is in the right place when she walks into that prison, but it doesn’t take long for her to realize that her heart shouldn’t have had any say so in the matter. Especially when one wrong move lands her in the arms of a scarred man that looks frightening enough to scare any sane woman away.
Immediately enthralled by the angry man, she tries to get closer to him. But the harder she tries to get to know him, the further he pushes her away.
The only thing Aaron wanted to do after his now ex-wife was sent to jail was escape. Escape the awful memories. The pity-filled eyes. The curious glances.
He does a damn fine job at ensuring he draws as little as attention as possible, but then that annoying woman with her startling blue eyes starts hammering away at his resolve. Makes him feel when he doesn’t want to feel.
Imogen comes into his life and carves out a place for herself, obliterating his defenses one heated kiss at a time.
This book is a bit slow to start for me. I also had a bit of a time following along in the beginning and having to toggle back and forth to follow along. I found that this was a spin-off of another series but can be read as a standalone. Once I got past the first bit it made sense to me. The writing is different from what I am used to but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The pace is steady for me. I read it one go and it did capture my attention. I just feel I was missing something as I never met Aaron before this book.
Aaron is a man that is lucky to be alive after his ex-wife did a number on him. He was left with scars inside and out. He is a former firefighter/medic that has turned into a prison guard turned cop, that still moonlights as a firefighter when needed. His police boss is the president of the Rejects MC as well. He is a bit self conscious about his scars, but he is a strong independent man who is afraid to trust after everything.
Imogen, a former marine, lives across the hall from Aaron, with her mother, sister Sunny and nephew. She is raising her nephew while her sister is deployed. She notices the hot sexy man on a bike, but doesn’t know him well at all. Aaron notices her as well and he is just keeping his distance, he simply doesn’t want to trust.
I loved Aaron, I fell hard for him. He has had some rough years. He has some great friends and they are there for him and don’t judge. I loved Imogen. I loved her drunk with her no filter. She was someone I could find myself being friends with. There are twists and turns in this book, some heartbreaking and will really hurt you, but you will also find yourself laughing as well. I’m pleased with myself and reading this book and you will be too. The author created a story where I was pulled in once it got going. I got why they thought they were rejects, but honestly I think they are misunderstood and a band of misfits. I loved where it went and can’t wait to read the next book in this series. I loved all of them. They are a really group of men and let’s not forget TAnk. I loved that dog as well. It’s a story about finding yourself and the beauty within.
