Growing up, Jason Stern led a charmed life complete with devoted sisters, a father who was one of Brooklyn’s most respected rabbis, and a mother who made the world’s best babka. He headed to NYU ready for anything—except falling for the wrong guy, coming out, and getting disowned by his once-loving family. In spite of that, Jason managed to graduate with honors. He’s got friends who treat him like family, and he’s proudly running the largest LGBTQ teen shelter in Manhattan. Life is good, but he’s still falling for the wrong men.
When charming, sexy Quinn Fitzpatrick begins work at the shelter, Jason falls hard and fast. Quinn is tall, blond, funny—damn near perfect. Only if Quinn’s gay, even he doesn’t seem to know it. If he does, he’s not telling anyone. And he’s about one ceremony away from becoming a Catholic priest.
Long hours of work turn to long nights of talking and laughter, and Jason dares to hope this time he’s falling for the right guy. But Quinn’s got a past to deal with and major decisions to make about his future. When Quinn leaves for a silent retreat, Jason knows the silence may change everything.
When I realised that this book was about Quinn and not Collin and Tanner, I was so looking forward to it. We don’t get to meet Quinn an awful lot in the first three books, and despite the fact that he wasn’t supportive of Collin when he came out, there was just something about him I liked and knew he’d have an awesome story to tell – I was right. These books just keep getting better.
The other main character involved is Jason. He’s the guy who had a crush on and worked beside Collin on Fire Island. He’d always known he was gay, so the day he goes to share the news with his Rabbi father that he has fallen in love with another boy, is the day that his father kicks him out of the family home and his mother and sisters go along with the decision. Now 24 years old, still estranged from his family and working for New Home, an LGBT organisation, he meets Collins eldest brother. Quinn is taking time out from his mission to become a priest. Wanting to make sure that this is what he really wants for the rest of his life before taking his final vows, he is hired by New Home to help them get their new building ready for their grand opening. With each day the men work together, the more Jason falls for him. Knowing that the combination of becoming a priest and being straight, can in no way stop the feelings he is developing, he also can’t stop wanting to be around this man.
Where there was a lot of drama in previous books, this one is a lot more emotionally charged and you are kept guessing right up to the end, what decisions Quinn is going to make about his life and love. I felt like I was on a bit of an emotional roller coaster with Jason. He went through so much with Quinn, with both their families and dealing with past hurts that have made him the incredible young man he is today. I seriously love these guys. The development of their relationship was so sweet and had an innocence to it that I really enjoyed. Of course, it’s not all sweet and innocent – if you know what I mean?! KS just knows how to write a sex scene or two that has you drooling. I had to pick my jaw up off the floor at one point the sex was so hot!!!
This has yet another happy ending, that I didn’t see coming, and is absolutely perfect. I couldn’t have hoped for better, though I was glad to reach the end of the story so I could once again stop holding my breath due to the anticipation. Will they/won’t they?? Arrrrgh…
I think this is my favourite book of the series so far and guess what? I can’t wait to start book 5….
