The heart’s a resilient beast
Eight months after the car crash that changed everything, FBI agent Aidan Talley is back at work. New department, new case and a new partner. Smart, athletic and handsome, Jameson Walker is twelve years his junior. Even if Aidan was ready to move on—and he’s not—Jamie is off-limits.
Jamie’s lusted after Aidan for three years, and the chance to work with San Francisco’s top agent directly is too good to pass up. Aidan is prickly—to put it mildly—but a growing cyber threat soon proves Jamie’s skills invaluable.
Jamie’s talents paint a target on his back, and Aidan is determined to protect him. But with hack after hack threatening a high-security biocontainment facility, time is running out to thwart a deadly terrorist attack. They’ll have to filter out distractions, on the case and in their partnership, to identify the real enemy, solve the case and save thousands of lives, including their own.
Single Malt is book one in the new series, Agents Irish and Whiskey by author Layla Reyne. This is a book that you are going to want to run out and get, it is the type of story that keeps you on the edge of your seat – flipping the pages as fast as you can, as your pulse is pounding away and you are both trying to figure out the mystery of the story and loving the romance between the two MC. The combo is addicting. Although author Layla Reyne was new to me, prior to this book, she will be an author I keep my eye on and watch for new books to come in the future!
The MC in this story are: Jameson “Whiskey” Walker, who is a former basketball champion and is now with the FBI in the Cyber Crimes division & Aidan “Irish” Talley who is an Irish ex-pat and is just returning to the FBI after the car crash that shredded his heart and life into little pieces. This car crash occurs prior to the start of this book and takes the life of Aidan’s husband, Gabe Cruz, and his FBI partner Tom. It has been only a little over 8 months since Aidan’s life was changed forever by a wreck that was ruled a random hit-and-run; however, now before he is set to return to duty information has surfaced that supports his belief that the wreck that rocked his world, was not random – it was a hit. Aidan’s sister-in-law/supervisory agent at work agrees to allow Aidan to investigate the wreck that took her brother but it has to be on the down low – nobody can know, nobody except his new partner that is – Whiskey.
When Whiskey sees his new partner strolling into work after being on an extended leave for more than 8 months – he is just as attracted to the sexy man in the three piece suit with the shamrock cufflinks as he was when he first met him. The only thing that has changed is now, Aidan is a widower and now, Jamie is paired up with Aidan – who he quickly nicknames, Irish. The sexual tension between the two is strong and working long hours together, depending on each other in life threatening situations, and being alone with each other for hours on end does nothing to quell the lust. Even if it is against regulation to fraternize with a fellow agent – there is only so much temptation these two men can take. “Walker knew exactly what he wanted, and fuck, the anticipation, the wanting, the end of the emptiness right there where he needed it most was killing him.” The only problem is, Aidan is afraid of getting his heart shredded again – so he reverts back to a manwhore. While Jamie can’t help himself and falls quickly for his partner. “I can’t promise you anything. I can’t get attached.” Whiskey tries to abide by the rules that Irish sets up; but the heart wants – what the heart wants and he finds himself getting deeper and deeper, even considering if he is falling in Love. – Their bodies settled into the intimate embrace, fitting seamlessly together again. They rocked back and forth, their rhythm in sync, just as they had been the past few weeks. They hadn’t needed to find this; it simply existed.”
I have to say that this book has it all – sexual tension and explosive chemistry that just keeps getting hotter and hotter, pulse-pounding excitement, characters that keep you enthralled as you eagerly devour the story, and it’s all topped off with a shot of suspense that makes the perfect mix! You won’t be able to put the book down – so don’t even try!
“No Promises, Whiskey. We have fun, we enjoy each other, we keep it casual and quiet.”
Even with all the warnings – the feelings develop. Will Aidan be able to move on from his loss and love again? Will he push Whiskey away – fear of pain and loss, ruining any chance of happiness? With time ticking on their cases and someone seeminly out to get these two agents – can they find a common ground?
You are going to have to get this book and find out! Trust me.. you are going to LOVE it!! While this book does end on a slight uneven keel, it is not a total cliffhanger and it is to be expected as the trilogy follows both agents while trying to solve the original question of – do you ever really know someone and can the heart ever really recover after it is shattered?
4.5 Stars – and I highly recommend this story!
