Growing up the outcast in an infamous family of psychics, Nate Black never learned how to control his empath abilities. Then after five years without contact, his estranged twin turns up dead in New York City. The claim of suicide doesn’t ring true, especially when a mysterious vision tells Nate it was murder. Now his long-hated gift is his only tool to investigate.
Hitching from his tiny Texas town, Nate is picked up by Trent, a gorgeous engineer who thrives on sarcasm and skepticism. The heat that sparks between them is instant and intense, and Nate ends up trusting Trent with his secrets—something he’s never done before. But once they arrive in the city, the secrets multiply when Nate discovers an underground supernatural community, more missing psychics, and frightening information about his own talent.
Nate is left questioning his connection with Trent. Are their feelings real, or are they being propelled by abilities Nate didn’t realize he had? His fear of his power grows, but Nate must overcome it to find his brother’s killer and trust himself with Trent’s heart.
We Welcome Santino Hassell in this exclusive expose ~ Enjoy!
Insight, it brings back feelings of “In the Company of Shadows” – do you have more fun writing paranormal stories, thrillers, versus contemporary Romance?
I wouldn’t say I have more fun, because the most fun I’ve had writing has honestly been with SUNSET PARK, and my upcoming football series with Intermix/Penguin, but writing paranormal and spec fic in general is an entirely different creative process. You’re not just developing characters, you’re creating an entire world and lore. So there’s a lot more creative freedom and experimenting, but it’s also a lot harder.
How did you research the world of psychics? Did you talk to actual psychics, read books, look online?
I read a lot of books on psychic powers, and I read a lot of blogs on empaths and empathic vampires, which was my focus. Many of the characters in The Community universe are empaths because in my fictional lore, that’s the most common sixth sense since everyone has a touch of it. The absence of or presence of empathy plays a large role in each book and how the characters interact with each other. In INSIGHT, a key point is whether empaths can use their ability to key into other people’s emotions to manipulate the people around them.
We don’t get to see inside Trent’s head during Insight. Will we get his side of the story or a look at what makes him tick in any of the following books?
You don’t get his point of view, because books 2 and 3 have different main characters. Trent will be in those books, though in a supporting role!
Will we get the full story of Nate’s mom? I personally think she is still alive and maybe at the Farm…am I way off?
I don’t want to spoil, but I will say there is a mom who plays a large role. 😊
Will there be any character overlap from other stories you have written, since The Community is in NYC.. will we see any of the 5B or CyberLove characters popping in?
Probably not since it’s a difference “universe”, however I find myself accidentally interconnecting the worlds when I’m drafting. Initially, I had a reference to a youth center called “Gateway”, and realized I was inserting Five Boroughs into The Community. LOL
What has been the most challenging aspect of this series?
Definitely connecting all the pieces and laying them out in a way that was suspenseful while planting seeds for things that come out in the later books. Foreshadowing is really tricky, especially because I have the romantic plot which resolves while the external overall trilogy plot is ongoing. INSIGHT is where momentum starts to build in that regard. It’s the book where a lot of things are discovered via Nate’s personal journey.
Now the details about Mr. HASSELL we were dying to know….
If you could redo one thing in a previously published book- change the couples, the setting, the background, etc.. Which book would it be, what would you change, why?
This is silly, but I’d go back in Five Boroughs and change a lot of the characters names. I swear I have like six characters whose names start with a C.
What is your favorite Genre to write?
Honestly, I would say contemporary. I like writing HEAs for the world we live in.
As a man writing romance, what is your favorite tropes to write about?
Friends-to-lovers, but that’s a common trope. I like writing about connections that evolve over time.
If you could co-author with anyone, who would it be? What kind of story?
Neil Gaiman! Mostly just so I can learn his process. I love his books and his voice. Maybe I could get him to write some awesome urban fantasy with queer characters.
How Many Licks does it take you to get to the center of a tootsie pop?
I bite into it instantly.
If you could insert yourself into any of your stories for a day as the MC, which story would it be, which character,..and why.
I’d definitely want to be Aiden in FIRST AND FIRST, because he’s slept with several super hot Five Boroughs characters just by going to Liberty X.
There you have it folks! Hope you enjoyed our look into Insight and of course now we all know the best way to enjoy a tootsie pop…bite it!
Santino was raised by a conservative family, but he was anything but traditional. He grew up to be a smart-mouthed grunge kid, then a transient twentysomething, and eventually transformed into a guy who spends his days and nights writing romance with an edge.
Santino is a dedicated gamer, a former fanfic writer, an ASoIaF mega nerd, a Grindr enthusiast, but most of all he is a writer of LGBT fiction that is heavily influenced by the gritty, urban landscape of New York City, his belief that human relationships are complex and flawed, and his own life experiences.
