Liam Scott is sick. That’s not supposed to be possible. As a wolf shifter, he’s supposed to be able to heal. The omega gene he was born with means he’s capable of carrying shifter young and Liam is worried that whatever is wrong will mean his one-day hope of having pups will be dashed. But despite the fears keeping him away from the doctor until now, he knows he needs to go.
It turns out the sickness is temporary, but the treatment causes a whole other problem.
Mason’s alpha gene means he’s one of very few wolves who can impregnate an omega male. For two years, he’d been watching Liam, but things kept getting in the way. When Liam shows up in heat, Mason recognizes the opportunity he needs and doesn’t hesitate make to Liam his mate and the father of his pups.
But Liam has old wounds and fears to work through which the pregnancy is only making worse, and Mason isn’t sure how to get past them to show he’s serious about making a life together as loving mates. It’s not until a female wolf decides Mason should be hers that Liam makes his biggest worry known—and Mason can finally put the fears to rest.
Three Hearts by Grace R. Duncan is a m/m mPreg Shifter story. This story is a standalone, and told from alternating POV between the MC Mason and Liam. Set in a slightly dystopian world where shifters are known about and integrated into human life, including working and living side by side. Shifters in this world shift once a month (mandatory on full moon), can shift at other times, and females and Omega’s go into heat once a month for four days. During this time, the Omega (even male Omega’s) can get pregnant if mated with an Alpha wolf. It is frowned upon to be out in public if you are in heat, so those unmated can take a hormonal heat suppressant – which allows them to skip their heat cycles.
When we start the story, Liam has been sick, he is tired and run down…it’s been going on for the past couple of weeks and he is afraid to find out what is wrong with him…so he has been putting off the doctor visit. When he does finally go to the Dr, he finds out he has a hormonal imbalance from missing his heat suppressant a couple months back, his sickness is easy to fix – with a hormone replacement. One catch – this replacement may or may not trigger a full blown heat. The first dose of the pill goes as expected, he starts feeling better, and yes he is having some symptoms of heat…but he doesn’t think he is in a full heat. Although he doesn’t really know what a full heat is, he is 28 years old and taken the suppresant from puberty, he is still a virgin – so its not entirely his fault he missed being in heat. The next day, day 2 of his replacement therapy, he has to run into work and drop off budgets to the CFO, Mason Hayes, they can’t be late and due to his recent illness he has been missing a lot of work. So he heads into his job, even with his false heat in full swing. When he walks into Mason’s office…he figures out, it isn’t a false heat as his pants become soaked as his body prepares itself for mating. But it’s too late..he just walked into Mason Hayes’s office, the man that fuels much of his spank-bank, the man he has lusted after for 2 years, and he is there …in full heat, Mason who is also an Alpha.
Mason Hayes can’t believe who just walked into his office. It’s Liam, the man he has wanted since the moment he glimpsed him over 2 years ago…the man he has been trying to figure out how to ask out. To top it off, this sweet little Omega came into his office in full heat. It was time to stake his claim, mate his Omega, and breed him…now. His wolf-mind had one thought “bend him over and plant my seed” —
These two quickly move from co-worker to mates. There is no dating as they are going about it all backwards, after 4 days of intense mating – I mean these two go at it like rabbits, there is sex, sex, and more sex
Put that on rinse, wash, repeat – you have the “plot” of the story.
I have to say that this book lacked a lot of romance and that was a bit of a let down. The breeding (yes I am calling it that because it went way past sex and Mason went at Liam with the sole purpose of getting Liam pregnant) portion of the story took over the plot. These two men didn’t communicate well and Liam was full of self-doubts and fears that all could have been abated had they taken the time to actually talk in between all of the sex. I felt like I was missing a huge part of the story, and I need more emotion and feelings involved in my books. Even when these two were being sweet to each other, it seemed superficial to me and more of an ownership thing rather than a true bond. I usually love shifter books because of the Wolf bond that occurs, this book lacked that- or at least I didn’t pick up on it. I went into this story thinking it would be like Devotion and the other books in The Forbes Mates Series….and it couldn’t have been further off.
Overall, not a win for me. If you are looking for a book with low romance – high sex, this book might fair better with you.
2 Stars – just not enough “story” for me.
