A Teacher and A Poet
Guest Post – Contest
Shawnee County, Kansas, might not be the most accepting place for a gay couple, but boyfriends Antony James and Curtis Ramírez have made it their home. Both of them work at Pauline Central Primary School, and while Antony is content teaching, Curt would rather pursue his passion: poetry. He plans to resign, but he doesn’t get the chance.
Working together has its risks, and when a student witnesses Antony and Curt sneaking a kiss in the workroom, they’re reprimanded. The school board’s punishment is mild, but some members of the community aren’t willing to let the indiscretion go. That small mistake could cost Antony and Curt their home—or it could remind them that home is in the heart, and as long as they stay strong in their love, they’ll always have a place to belong.
States of Love: Stories of romance that span every corner of the United States.
Hello there, everybody. I’m Cy Blanca. I just published my very first novella ever, and I couldn’t be more excited. I want to thank Alpha Book Club for giving me a chance to blog for them today.
When I saw the choice to write a playlist I freaked out! As with my two main characters, music is a huge part of my life. So much so I had to cut half the list so it didn’t becom obnoxious (seriously, 50 songs is kinda pushin it). So hopefully O’ve done my boys proud and given a list that sums them and their relationship up. Enjoy, y’all!
1. Crush – Woo Ah
Somewhere along the line, Antony was introduced to Korean R&B. He’s always had a soft spot for this artist, but this song in particularly reawakened something inside him. He can’t stop playing this song or the album it came from (Interlude) no matter how sick Curt gets of hearing it. Of course with this track, it’s easy to convince Curt to let Antony play it just one more time.
2. Anderson .Paak – Waterfall
Not much to be said about this song. Just a bit of foreplay before the fun really starts.
3. D’Angelo – Untitled (How Does It Feel)
Everyone knows this is the baby-making song of all baby-making songs. This track is such a big part of Curt and Antony’s life together. The nights they’ve just needed to disappear from the world for a moment, it was most likely this song playing in the background.
4. BJ the Chicago Kid – The Resume (feat. Big K.R.I.T.)
Curt’s a poet. Everyone knows it. But unfortunately being a semi-known poet doesn’t pay any of the bills. One night after a particularly nasty disagreement about Curt’s employment, Antony went to cool off while Curt stewed. He gets the idea to put this song on, try to convince Antony to forgive him and trust him that he’ll certainly start looking for jobs in the morning. In the meantime, he implores Antony to consider his résumé.
5. Sy Smith – The Art of You
That’s exactly what Curt thinks of Antony—as a work of art. Sy Smith has managed to put into words exactly how much awe Antony inspires in Curt.
6. D’Angelo – Send it On
I remember a scene in my head. It was raining. Curt was struggling with getting words on the page. Antony, noticing Curt’s frustration, turned on D’Angelo’s Voodoo, skipping right to this song. He strode over to Curt, gently placed is hands on Curt’s shoulders, and convinced him to put the pen down for the night and just… dance. So that’s what they did. Danced in the middle of the living room. Of course, this was all foreplay….
7. KING – Red Eye
This song speaks to their desire to spend the rest of their lives together discovering new destinations.
8. Dean (feat. Anderson .Paak) – Put My Hands On You
The title alone is self-explanatory. A Korean R&B artist both Curt and Antony can agree on. Both of them can relate to having the urge to just… touch.
9. Vikter Duplaix – Pure
Though they can tend to get a little… frisky when they’re around each other, there’s nothing corrupt or untoward about Curt and Antony’s relationship. It’s love in its purest form—unadulterated and not the least bit jaded.
10. Julie Dexter – Peace of Mind
Sometimes Curt has a hard time winding down from a tough day of writing (or wrangling third graders). It’s one of those times that Antony has to ease away the tension with a scalp massage and restore Curt’s mental peace.
11. Sade – Stronger Than Pride
Music is such a large part of Curt and Antony’s life. It either provides the backdrop to some of their most sensual moments or otherwise defines a time in their lives that is forever engrained in their memories. After a particularly heated “debate,” the two went to their respective corners to cool off. A couple hours later, Antony turns on Sade, proclaiming his love for Curt is always stronger and more important than his ego.
12. Arijit Singh – Khul Kabhi
The love theme from Haider is one of the most romantic pieces of music Curt had ever heard. So he obviously had to share it with the love of his life… and act out the respective scene.
13. Weekend Players – Jericho
There are moments when Curt and Antony just need to feel close to one another, to fill each other up with just the scent. This track by Weekend Players perfectly describes their need for each other.
14. Fat Jon – How You Feel
Two of Curt’s favorite artists are Nujabes and Fat Jon. Both take him to a space that allows him to get out some of the stars in his head. This song specifically holds a special place. It soothed him during a particularly rough patch in his life.
15. Blue Six – Half Light
There’s nothing more soothing for both Curt and Antony than sitting on the couch in front of the window in their living room listening to smooth ambient music. Their favorite artist in this aspect is Blue Six, and their favorite song is the ocean breeze sway of “Half Light.”
16. Alabama Shakes – Gemini
Both Curt and Antony agree there’s nothing more sensual than a blues guitar. When Antony first heard this track he didn’t hesitate. He put it on just as Curt was about to finish writing for the night and let the magic and Curt’s own writer’s high do the rest.
17. Van Hunt – Down Here in Hell (With You)
Curt and Antony really do love each other, but as with all relationships (romantic or otherwise) sometimes being that close is like being in hell. At the end of the day, however, they’d rather have an “imperfect” relationship and go through hell than be the picture of serenity alone. Besides, make-up sex is always the best, right?
18. Luis Fonsi – Consada
Another dancing in the rain song. It’s kind of disgusting how in love these two are sometimes. But they sure go for it all the way when they want to express it.
19. Elliott Smith – Between the Bars
Moving away from the guys for a second. This song holds a special place in my heart. It’s one of those heartbreaking type of romantic songs that lingers on your skin. I used this song to write the love scene between my men because of just how intimate it is.
20. Meshell Ndegeocello – Beautiful
This song describes Curt’s addiction for Antony to a T. For Curt, there’s no one more beautiful or perfect than his Antony.
21. Maxwell – Bad Habits
Antony is relatively responsible, lives his life mostly on the straight and narrow. His one weakness, temptation, and his worst habit is Curt. Something about that man just makes Antony want to be naughty… and he’d have it no other way.
22. Nujabes – Aruarian Dance
As was mentioned, two of Curt’s favorite artists are Fat Jon and Jun Seba (known by the stage name Nujabes). Something about the Japanese producer’s music just soothes him in a way that most things (besides his lover) can’t. He can always find his words better and in a clearer head space when he plays this song.
I would like to again thank Alpha Book Club and their readers for having me. I hope you’ve enjoyed my playlist—and perhaps discovered some new music to fall in love with. Cheers!
