Life is a thread connecting us. One pull and it all unravels.
Cole Gannon arrives in the seaside town of Ocean Vista to work as a bartender and finally find a place to belong. Determined to make a home for himself, Cole lives happily with his four colorful roommates, whom he considers brothers. The only problem is Cole’s attraction to Ian Stark—a guy all wrong for him. He wishes he didn’t keep running into the sexy lawyer.
Ian knows Cole is attracted to him, but the younger man keeps him at arm’s length. It only makes Ian more determined to be with Cole and learn all his secrets. But while Ian has built a successful law practice, he hasn’t done too well with relationships.
When a sudden and devastating tragedy occurs, it shatters Cole’s world and throws Cole and Ian together in unexpected ways. In an instant, everything between them changes forever.
This was my first experience with this author. In the very beginning I wasn’t sure I was going to like it, and then by halfway through, I was convinced I hated her – not because I was correct about my initial impression, but rather because I was a sobbing, fully emotionally involved mess, and it was entirely her fault for writing this so beautifully!
Cole has been on his own for a long time, and he and his roommates have formed a family unit of their own in their rental house in Ocean Vista, Florida. One of the roommates is studying to become an attorney, and is working in a law office belonging to Ian, whom Cole likes but refuses to pursue because his roomie has shared his own affections for the litigator. You can see the angst building, right? Yeah, so could I!
Then – a stunning plot twist written in such a way as I’ve never read before! A random accident and subsequent tragedy rips apart the copacetic dynamic of the roommates’ home, and Cole and Ian find their way into each other’s arms for comfort, which quickly builds to an incredible chemistry. Can they find their way past tragedy and heartbreak, or will the differences in their lives be too insurmountable?
The plot of this novel is wonderfully realized, helped by a full cast of characters that take the flat dimension of the written word and make it an evocative realism into which the reader can completely immerse him or herself. The growth and shifting dynamics within this character-driven novel provide storyline pacing that is steady and rich with imagery.
It is clear from the reviews I’ve seen on varying sites that this is a love it or hate it kind of book, and for me, it was a definite “love it!” If you’re already feeling sad, don’t start this one. Set it aside for a day when you’re doing okay, as it will shred your heart and you’ll need your inner strength. This is a 4.5 star read – a compelling driver to pick up the next in the series!
