When he left for a twelve-month deployment, she knew it would feel like forever before they saw each other again. She didn’t realize how right she was.
When Lance Corporal Brecken Connolly gets taken as a POW, Camryn hopes for the best but steels herself for the worst. In the end, steel was what she needed to survive when he didn’t. She moves on the only way she knows how—gilding herself in more steel.
Years go by.
She builds a new life.
She leaves the old one behind.
Until one day, she sees the face of a ghost on the news. Brecken seems to have risen from the dead, but she knows she can’t perform the same miracle for herself. While Brecken was held in a torture camp for the past five years, she’s been trapped in her own kind of prison. One she can’t be saved from.
The man she mourned comes back to join the living, but the girl he wanted to spend his life with isn’t the same woman he comes back for. Brecken isn’t the same person either. The past five years have changed them both. While he’s determined to put the pieces back together, she’s resolved to let hers rot where they shattered.
Broken or not, Brecken wants her back. He’ll do anything to achieve that. Even if it means going against the warden of Camryn’s personal prison—her husband.

Let me start with, that I love Nicole Williams. I fell in love with her as an author after reading her Crash series. I knew nothing of this book before I read it. I just knew I had to read it because I just read all of her books. I like how she does YA/NA and we get to see the characters grow. This is something different but the same. We get them in high school then we see them six years later. The writing just sucked me in. My heart was so happy reading about their love in the beginning chapter, then it was stomped on, then it was put back together and then shredded again. Yes, that many times. There are trigger warnings in this book. So be warned but this is so worth the read.
Camryn was in personal hell living with her father when her boyfriend and love was getting ready to ship out to Iraq with his Marine Corp unit. They have been friends forever and he saved her from a beating at the young age of thirteen. All they have to do is wait for Brecken to return. What’re twelve months right? Well, then she gets to watch him die on national television as an abducted POW. My heart broke for her at that point.
Now we fast forward six years later and Brecken is alive and he is coming home. All he wants to do is see Camryn. He still loves her and that hasn’t changed. Man oh man, Brecken was everything you want in a man all wrapped in one. His love for Camryn is what got him through the hell the Iraqi had put him through. He was beaten and tortured.
Camryn has changed so much since Brecken had been gone. She has moved on and married someone else and put Brecken behind her. Or has she? Even after all this time, Brecken is the only person in that town that can see through the mask she wears when he returns.
Brecken will take Camryn any way he can get her, even if it’s only her friend. He has survived and lived to keep his promise. This was such an emotional read that tugs at your heart. Nicole Williams knows exactly what she is doing getting you sucked in and rooting for the best outcome. I found myself at times fanning my eyes and telling my husband I yawned or had allergies when my eyes got teary. I just felt so much. Camryn is a strong woman even if at times she didn’t feel like it. She is putting up a front to protect the one she loves. She has no one on her side until Brecken comes back. Come back he does and moves in next door to Camryn and her husband Crew, a police detective. She is doing what she has to do to survive, just as Brecken had to. Yes, they were different circumstances but they both went through what they did in the same way in sorts and it made them stronger people. Brecken is an amazing man, I simply can’t put into words without giving anything away at how much I loved him. He would do anything for the woman he loved and still loves.
If you love a strong male lead that would do anything to get the love of his life back, then read this second chance romance.
