Life for Dexter J. Daley has never been easy, but he’s always found a way to pick himself back up with a smile on his face. Taken from his home, and the arms of his boyfriend and THIRDS partner, Sloane Brodie, Dex finds himself in a situation as mysterious and lethal as the Therian interrogating him. Dex learns what he’s secretly believed all along: his parents’ death wasn’t an accident.
Discovering the whole truth about John and Gina Daley’s homicide sets off a series of events that will change Dex and Sloane’s lives forever. As buried secrets rise to the surface and new truths are revealed, Dex and Sloane’s love for each other is put to the test, with more than their relationship on the line. If traversing the waters of murder and secret government agencies wasn’t enough, something inexplicable has been happening to Dex—and nothing will ever be the same.
I’ve read this in print and in audiobook and I was enthralled by both of them. Charlie Cochet, one of my favorite authors, meets Mark Westfield, one of my favorite narrators in this amazing piece of work. Westfiled’s voice makes character differentiation extremely easy and his representation of both Dex and Sloane was spot on. Reading audiobooks vs. reading print books makes a major difference in the way that I experience a story and even rereading this book as audio, I felt like seeing Sloane and Dex from another perspective gave me a deeper understanding of who they were as characters.
As this isn’t the first book in the series nor our first introduction to Sloane and Dex, I’ll cut the character intro’s short and just say that those two make this series what it is. There’s something about Dex that makes him unavoidably charismatic and loveable and Sloane has this standoffish attitude with Dex among the few who really get to know him and they just fit together so well, not only as a team at THIRDS but also as life partners.
As a major part of this book is the mystery, I don’t want to give anything away, but I will say that I was surprised at every turn of the page. Not only were Sloane and Dex extremely hot together (per usual), but the mystery kept me guessing and engaged, just like the previous six books of this series. If you’re not familiar with the THIRDS series, you need to start at Hell & High Water and read your way through the series. It’s 100% worth the read and the audiobook version of the novel brings another dimension of life to this world Cochet has created. Highly recommended.
