Growing up the outcast in an infamous family of psychics, Nate Black never learned how to control his empath abilities. Then after five years without contact, his estranged twin turns up dead in New York City. The claim of suicide doesn’t ring true, especially when a mysterious vision tells Nate it was murder. Now his long-hated gift is his only tool to investigate.
Hitching from his tiny Texas town, Nate is picked up by Trent, a gorgeous engineer who thrives on sarcasm and skepticism. The heat that sparks between them is instant and intense, and Nate ends up trusting Trent with his secrets—something he’s never done before. But once they arrive in the city, the secrets multiply when Nate discovers an underground supernatural community, more missing psychics, and frightening information about his own talent.
Nate is left questioning his connection with Trent. Are their feelings real, or are they being propelled by abilities Nate didn’t realize he had? His fear of his power grows, but Nate must overcome it to find his brother’s killer and trust himself with Trent’s heart.
Insight is not your typical MM story. It’s also not your typical Santino Hassell book. I’m a huge Hassell fan, I’ve loved everything he’s ever written but I wasn’t sure I would like this story since it’s a paranormal mystery/ thriller which is not something Hassell normally writes.
I was pleasantly surprised by Insight. I liked it way more than i thought I would. Nate, is an outcast in his small Texas town, working as a liquor store clerk to make ends meet. His family are outcasts, considered weird, a bunch of fuck ups but truth be told they’re all gifted with supernatural powers. Nate is an empath and his twin brother Theo was also one. Nate’s life changes forever once he has a dream of his twin dying. The dream scares Nate so much that he sets off to find out what caused his brother’s death.
A chance meeting with Trent, while working at the liquor store gives Nate the perfect road companion for his long trip to New York. Sparks flew between these two the moment they met but the romance kinda takes a backseat while Hassell focused on helping Nate solve his brother’s murder.
There’s a lot to this story and honestly, I don’t want to ruin it for you because it is a mystery thriller. What I can tell you is that this story is very good. It’s very well written and I can’t wait to read book two. This story is not like Hassell’s other books. The romance does take a backseat but what’s there sets the pages on fire 🙂 The story is fast paced, engaging and honestly, I didn’t put the book down until I finished it. I had to know how it would all end! There is no cliff hanger (in the romance department)! Hallelujah!
Kudos to Hassell for writing something new and doing so well with it. I wasn’t a big fan of Stygian and was honestly nervous I would be disappointed with this one. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case 🙂 This was an enjoyable read from beginning to end. Recommended.
