Sequel to Smoke & Mirrors
In a matter of days, Dex has been kidnapped, tortured, killed, revived, become half Therian, offered the chance to become a spy, and accepted a proposal to marry his jaguar Therian boyfriend, Sloane Brodie. It’s been a lot to take in, and although Dex is still trying to wrap his head around everything that’s happened, he knows he has to move forward.
After the events of Smoke & Mirrors, Dex and Sloane find themselves in one of the most frightening situations of all: revealing the truth to their Destructive Delta family. When the dust settles, nothing will ever be the same, and it’s up to Dex to prove that in the face of change, the one thing that will always remain the same is family. (less)
I started book 8 with my heart pounding. There was so much emotional upheaval and revelations in book seven, I wasn’t sure if my heart could take much more on such short notice. I pulled it together and dived right in and it was good. I promise no spoilers. I’ll focus instead on how I felt as the story unfolded.
My heart immediately went out to Dex. So many changes have been thrown his way in a short period of time. I worried about how he would handle it all how he and Sloane would tackle the unexpected hurdles tossed their way thanks to Sparks. Like a true partner, Sloan is there for Dex in his moment of need. Dex doesn’t know what his transformation means. He doesn’t know what Sparks and TIN have in store for Destructive Delta and his dad. The only things Dex is certain about is that he will do everything in his power to protect his team and his family.
I laughed and teared up a couple times. I mean come on! These guys are my family too 🙂 Chirpy’s desire to kick Sloane’s ass upon learning of Dex’s transformation had me in stitches. Ash advising Sloan not to procreate with Dex, Sloane responding that Dex can’t get pregnant and Ash advising that if they procreate Sloane better not use Dex’s sperm had me choking on tears & laughter. That whole scene was everything! That was actually the first time I felt that everything would be okay… for now.
I’m happy this installment was a bit lighter. I refer to it as the calm before the storm and trust me the storm in churning and visibly on the horizon. I needed the respite from all the heavy in book 7. Charlie Cochet, that little Minx, has dropped enough breadcrumbs that I’m already salivating for book 9. I foolishly tortured myself, reading the excerpt from book 9 and now I cannot wait for Hudson and Seb’s story! It’s about darn time! Is it April yet?
