Author: Jaime Reese
A series about second chances and the men who fight them.
Welcome Jaime Reese
I thought a good starting point for this post would be an intro. 🙂
I have a two distinct but overlapping sides to myself—three if you take into account my RL self. My author side is Jaime Reese and my cover artist side is Reese Dante. I’m also a wife to a wonderfully supportive hubby, and a mom to an incredibly lovable and spoiled 120lb dog named Rocco. Aside from all of this, I also help organize the GRL Retreat.
I’m often asked if I will be attending this show or that show. Seems there’s at least one author or writing related event going on at any given time somewhere in the world. I tend to shy away from conferences. While I do understand the benefits from an author’s perspective and I would love to be there for those readers who stop by, there’s always hesitation that keeps me from taking that extra step.
Not to mention the mountain of work that would welcome me upon my return.
Anyone who knows me can attest to the fact that I’m not quiet or shy. But I’m certainly guarded and reserved in new and unfamiliar social settings. But I believe that has more to do with the fact that I work from home and I’m often on my own as I tackle projects. So going from a party of 2 to a part of 500 is a big jump. It’s almost sensory overload and requires I slowly work my way up, adjusting into smaller groups before diving into the crowded end of the pool. But I do it and look forward to attending each year. Why? Because it’s GRL.
So why is GRL so different?
There’s one element in the GRL formula that makes everything work.
It’s difficult to explain to anyone who has never attended. But there’s something magical about being surrounded by others who share similar interests. You don’t get the odd glances or the snarky remarks because you love to read our niche romance. It’s a book club on steroids, with enough enthusiasm to power a small town. For many, it’s the one event in the year they attend where they can openly chat with others who read the same stories, love the same authors, and hate the same characters. The smiles are huge, the laughter is loud, and the groups clustering together to chat about books are large.
That comfort comes from the people. They are the special ingredient in the GRL recipe. They are the secret weapon that drives me to break through my shell, smile more, crack jokes, and release my inner sailor (although I should really work on keeping him locked away).
Each year I attend, I try to shed another layer and open myself up a tiny bit more. This will be my third year attending as a registered author. And while the nerves are still there, I know the people will ease that tension.
It’s what they do without even knowing they are doing it. And I am forever grateful.
About Jaime Reese
Jaime Reese is the alter ego of an artist who loves the creative process of writing, just not about herself. Fiction is far more interesting. She has a weakness for broken, misunderstood heroes and feels everyone deserves a chance at love and life. An avid fan of a happy ending, she believes those endings acquired with a little difficulty are more cherished.
GayRomLit is an annual retreat that brings together the people who create and celebrate LGBT romance for a one-of-a-kind, must-attend gathering of dynamic, informal, and diverse fun.
Each year, the retreat rotates to a new city and hosts tons of events from raucous parties to mellow tête á têtes while still maintaining a spirit of familiarity. GRL is the place to connect with old friends, find family you didn’t know you had, and meet with both newly published and established authors in the gay romance genre.
This year’s retreat will be held in Denver, Colorado on October 19-22, 2017 at the Denver Marriott Tech Center.
