Dr. Jason Kunik is working on the most earth-shattering genetics project ever, DNA mapping of a new species, the quickened—dogs who can shift into human form. The problem is, no one knows the quickened exist and Jason can’t betray them by publishing his studies. When he moves to Mad Creek to continue his research in a town full of quickened, all he wants is peace, quiet, and to be allowed to bury himself in his work. Perhaps if he figures how out the mutation is activated, he can silence his own inner dog forever.
Milo is a hospice comfort dog who has bonded with, and lost, many beloved patients in his life. He intuitively understands sickness and pain on a spiritual level most can’t see. When he gains the ability to become a man, he thinks he finally has everything he ever wanted. But being a man isn’t the same thing as being loved, and taking shelter in Mad Creek isn’t the same thing as finding a home.
When a mysterious illness hits Mad Creek and threatens all the quickened in town, it’s up to the scientist and the comfort dog to figure out what it is and how to stop it. Along the way they might discover that true love is possible—if you wish upon a star.
Another excellent story with a happy ending — 5+Stars
I have to say each book in the series gets me more and more hooked! This is book three in Eli Easton’s Howl at the Moon series. In this story we get to meet another newly quickened, much like Roman was in book 2 — only we meet Milo, within weeks of him getting the spark and we get to watch him learn to adapt and do things that we all take for granted. In many ways Milo is childlike and innocent and in others he is smarter and can be just as sexy as any quickened male, even a stuffy geneticist who is suppressing his inner dog.
Jason is a Geneticists who was born quicken. As most people who are born with certain qualities he doesn’t appreciate his ability to be a dog and he resents his dog. He wants to know what causes some dogs to get the spark and become quicken and others not. Recently finding himself back in Mad Creek after some issues at work, Jason has found himself in the perfect place to figure out the phenomena of quickening. But Jason, doesn’t want to find out the “why” behind the process to help others become quicken, no he wants to suppress his dog, an Alaskan Malamute, who he has already suppressed for years — you see Jason wants to be Only human.
Milo, as previously mentioned is a first generation quicken, meaning he has newly gotten the spark and can change from his dog form, a labradoodle, to a man. Milo has been living at a hospice and the nurses there state that Milo the dog has a sixth sense about when someone needs them or when one of their patients are close to death. Milo is always there when they need him. It’s by chance that Lilly, Lance’s mom, finds Milo when she is visiting her mentor at the hospice. Lilly brings Milo back to Mad Creek, and the fun begins!
When Jason and Milo meet, Jason is drawn to Milo. He agrees to allow Milo to live with him and in his own mind thinks this is a perfect arrangement, he will have a live in subject to study! As they say, best laid plans and all…Milo ends up teaching Jason a lot..but it’s in his own way. When Jason is trying to find out what Milo remembers about the transition and anything that occurred to cause the spark. Milo says he know exactly why….
I love these two, Jason is all “science this and that” and Milo is “I simply feel it and know it” together they are perfect for each other!!
During this story we see the town of Mad Creek come together like no other town as a virus appears that seems to only affect the quicken. This virus causes people to revert back to their dog and all traces of humanity are lost – the towns people are scared and with no outside help allowed they quickly turn to one of their own, Jason. While Jason is unsure if he will be able to help in time he also knows he is the towns only possible help and quickly sets to work trying to figure out where the virus came from and how they can get in contact with dog zero to make an effective antidote and vaccination. Milo, being a person and dog that is used to helping others in distress immediately wants to help find a treatment – he doesn’t care that he may be at risk of losing his new found humanity. As more and more quicken fall under this viruses attack, including Lance the town sheriff, Jason, Milo, Roman, and Tim head out to search for the origin and end up in Arizona at an empty dog shelter. Will they be able to find the origin of the virus in time to make a cure for all of their loved ones back in Mad Creek or could this be the end of the quicken? You will be on the edge of your seat as you quickly read through this amazing story that Eli Easton has weaved together and watch as Jason finds out that Love is not just a chemical response — but something amazing!
“If Jason was honest, he’d wanted to kiss Milo a hundred times while they were in the car. He was just…. A growl of frustration roared in his throat. As if it was just done with his mental dithering, his inner dog spirit took the wheel and his body turned of its own accord. He grabbed Milo and pressed him back against the tile wall. Milo laughed, bright and happy, for the few seconds it took for Jason to press full up against him and stop the laugh by covering Milo’s mouth with his own. Heaven. It felt like heaven. Like awakening from a nightmare to find you were safe and sound. Like pulling into port after an endless journey.”
“He was so stunning like this, so purely what he was with no artifice and no hiding. Milo’s face was full of love and Jason’s heart was squeezed like a sponge. All the feelings he’d been storing up inside, denying, poured out like water overspilling a dam. Beautiful creature. My Milo.
“Jason was all “no” “no” with his mouth and “yes” “yes” with his heart. He made Milo’s insides smile and sometimes flutter too.”
You have to read this series! Even if you don’t like paranormal or shifters..I am telling you this series is excellent!! It gives new meaning to dog and man being best friends!!
~ 5+ Stars ~ can’t wait for next book and audiobook of this story!!
